Memories Blossom

Memories Blossom
Memories blossom
open their buds to become
odes to my childhood.
My guardian angel
comes to me in the shape of memory:
my grandfather stands framed
in an open refrigerator door,
reaching into its dark womb
he lifts me out
giving me a second
chance to live. ...[Read Full Post]

A Week of Poems

A Week of Poems
Day 1
I savor the taste
of morning's first cup of joe
bold aromatic java.
Day 2
Tranquility dawns
Long Healing Prayer intoned
in the day's first light.
Day 3
Morning clouds gather
reveals patchwork of blue sky:
Will it rain today?

The Silence After: to S. A. S.

The Silence After:
To Shirlee Alice Schmidt
The silence after,
her spirit ascended
into the spiritual world,
reverberated through our minds
to penetrate our souls.

The silence after,
our tears were shed,
ascended
on the atoms of our loneliness
to her new abode.

The silence after,
our prayers were said,
ascended on chords of love
announced to God and all His host
her entrance into their realm.

Reading In Bed

Reading Poetry in Bed
My mind
sated with verse
falls into a contemplative stupor.

Eye lids close,
pupils focus on the interplay
of light and shadow.

Words unassociated
with what I just read
jolt my mind.

Eye lids open,
pupils focus on the interplay
of meter and rhyme.

Reading the Word of God in Bed
My mind
hungry for reality
consumes the holy words.

Eye lids
heavy with medit...[Read Full Post]

Meditation: Echoes of My Steps

Meditation:
Echoes of My Steps
Silence is my companion,
as I walk the corridors of my mind,
the empty corridors of my mind.

The corridors reverberate,
with the echoes of my steps,
the fleeing echoes of my steps,
leaving me alone in the silence of my mind.

Pausing before an unnumbered door,
I listen to the echoes of my steps,
the retreating echoes of my steps,
leaving me alone.

Alone to open the door,
or retreat d...[Read Full Post]

Common Things
I enjoy the common sights,
stars at night, a sleeping cat,
the rising and the setting sun,
a seed-bun or painted mat.

I enjoy the common sounds,
baying hounds, and marching bands,
chanted prayers, hymns of praise,
singing joys and clapping hands.

I enjoy the common tastes,

lemon t ea, peanut butter,
honey butter, hot corn bread.

My Grandmother's Cat
My Grandmother's cat
was a neutered Siamese
that answered to the name of Jay.

On hot summer days,
Jay cat napped
curled up in a hen's nest.

While Jay slept,
the hens would lay their eggs
in nests on either side.

Jay and Pal,
the neighbor's Boarder Collie
would play in the shade
of my Grandmother's Cottonwood Tree
and share Pal's water dish.

Salvation: The First and Second Time

The First Time Salvation Came To Me
I was a child,
the first time salvation came to me!

Virginal,
untested,
marked only by original sin,
no action to condemn me,
except my parents copulation
at my conception.

When salvation came
the pews were hard,
uncomfortable.
and straight backed wooden benches.

The organist played

and I marched to the front

An Oklahoma Winter

An Oklahoma Winter
In anticipation of snow
my Grandmother cocooned me
in layers of warm wool,
bundled me in strata of socks,
sweaters,
leggings,
slacks,
mittens,
coats,
head scarves,
and ear muffs
to protect me
from the arctic cold
of an Oklahoma winter.

In anticipation of snow,
I inhaled the crisp morning air,
and savoring the frigid succulence
I waited for the first white flakes
to melt on my extended tongue.

words of comfort,

May 6, 2014: Cease the Day

Cease the Day! This is something I need to do every morning. I wake up when the alarm sounds and then ignore the alarm. This morning I didn't get up until after 5:00 am. I took my thyroid meds, did my other morning stuff, said a prayer, and started writing; as a results I didn't go to the laundromat. I did leave the house to take out a bag of trash, but that's about it. I haven't gone to the mail box to pick up today's mail if I received any.

Paper dolls
clipped carefully
from the catalogue's shiny pages
rested in neat piles,
waiting to be dressed in new outfits.

My auburn tresses
combed back from my face
tempted the silver scissors

Hide And Seek

Hide And Seek
"One thousand...
Two thousand...
Three thousand..."
Charlett's voice followed me,
as I crept
up the wooden steps
and slipped
onto the faded gray porch.

Its back against the side of the house,
the white Frigidaire beckoned,
its silver handle reflecting

Groundbreaking of the Las Vegas Baha'i Center

Groundbreaking of the First Baha'i Center
Constructed in the Sate of Nevada, November 10, 1996 A.D.
Littered with stones,
washed down from mountains
that ten billion years ago
was the floor of an inland sea,
the ground lays ready;
prepared to sacrifice its all
for the Glory of God.

Created
from the sacrifices of creatures
whose bodies
littered the floor of an ancient ocean,
the stones have waited ten billion years...[Read Full Post]

Someone Who Left

Someone Who Left
There have been so many who have left. How do I choose which one to write about. The first person who left was my father. He left us even before the divorce. He left for bottles of beer, one right after another until he came home drunk. What was so bad in his life, that he had to drown the memory in beer? One thing I am sure of, he did not drink because of my mother, my siblings, or myself.

He left us--Mom, my si...[Read Full Post]

If I can't be happy today

So I will face it.

Today there is humanity to love,
So I will love humanity.
If I can't love today,
What day am I waiting for?

Today there are tears to cry,

out of the white coals

I am living creatively
one day at a time
taking the good with the bad,

I am living creatively

writing my thought sentence by sentence,
phrase by phrase,
clearly and carefully,
or haphazardly,
whichever seems right at the time.

I am living creatively
merging my past and my present

A New Beginning
At age sixty
I started my life over,
striving to live
not for myself,
but for my Best-Beloved.

I am unworthy to serve Him;
unworthy to proclaim His message to humanity,
yet I am here
awaiting His command,
offering my pen,
my body,
my blood,
my life,
to proclaim the oneness of the human race.
the oneness of religion,
the oneness of God
to a planet in the midst of Armageddon.

Places I've Traveled

Places I've Traveled
Lake Carl Blackwell is in Oklahoma. My family and I went there for three years straight on the fourth of July when I was a child. The impact it had on me was the accidents that occurred there when we went. The first year, my youngest brother nearly drowned because the life jacket he was wearing was defective. The second year, my cousin pulled a skillet of hot bacon greas off the camp stove and burned herself...[Read Full Post]

The memory I treasure most
is one of my Grandpa Newland
He was the only Grandfather that was alive

My earliest memory of Grandpa

I was very young,
somewhere between 3 and 5,
we went to my cousin's house,
they lived in the country
and we lived in town.

Why I Write

Why I Write
I have to write! I am compelled to form characters into words, words into sentences, and sentences into paragraphs. This is not a physical desire, and it has noting to do with material wealth. The need to write descends from my soul, crosses the umbilical cord of my mind, and inhabits my brain.

Not to write would be a sin against God and humanity. If I could not write, could not express myself in lines and stanzas, m...[Read Full Post]

As I drive home,
down Boulder Highway,

in the next lane.

Imitating
the Santa Anas,
this Las Vegas gale
harasses me
after I get out of my car:
its gusts
molest my hair,
puts hands up my skirt,
or down my blouse,
and attempts to undress me
as I fight my way into the house.

One of the Reasons I have Issues with Christmas
On the day of my nativity, the Christmas Tree always stood dressed in its holiday finery, with presents spread across its skirt.
Veterans Day: Tribute to Some of the Veterans I Have Known

Veterans Day:
A Tribute to Some of the Veterans I Have Known
I remembered you today
in your green army fatigues
when you came home from Vietnam.

I remembered you today
your face was a colleague
of every veteran I have known:

I remembered you,
with the face of Grand Uncle Roy
who refused to talk about mustard gas in France;

I remembered you,
with the face of my father
who served at Roswell in World War II;

I rem...[Read Full Post]

Blackwell, Oklahoma

Blackwell, Oklahoma
Beauty, seen through the eyes of a child,
Lays in the little things of childhood.
A fleeting memory of a house on a street named
College: A street on which there was once a Community College.
Knowledge, comprehended through the mind of a child, is
Wisdom that an adult doesn't understand.

My Father: Memories I have

My Father:
Memories I Have
His face is enshrined in childhood memories;
Arms lifting shoulder high;
Paternal laughter...deep and echoing;
Passing via train through verdant farmlands;
Yarns of his childhood revised and edited.

Forgotten memories come to the surface:
A day at the Kay County Fair;
The summer evening spent on the front porch;
Holiday visits to Grandmother's house;
Easter egg hunts and Christmas dinners a...[Read Full Post]

My Choice
"Get rid of it!"
You said with such disgust,
as if the child w were discussing
was conceived in hate,
not lust.

My choice was made!
To obey you
would only compound the problem:
Could I
absolve on sin
by committing another?

You didn't want to hear my view!
You cared
only about yourself,
and how my decision affected you;
I knew
life began at conception.

The 4th of July at Lake Carl Blackwell

The 4th of July At Lake Carl Blackwell
Reflecting the 4th of July sky,
blue waves washed onto the warm sand,
like curse bearing angles
three years in a row.

The warm waters of Lake Carl Blackwell
pulled at Tom's struggling body,
only to be robbed of its prey
by my observant grandfather.

Bacon grease sizzled

from different directions
uprooting trees
and tearing doors off hinges.

The wind
drove sheets of rain
into the city,
onto the college campus,
and across the interstate highway...
in several directions
at once.

The trees
that weren't uprooted
were flattened to the ground.

We were stranded!

Power lines
and poles
were knocked down.

Electricity went off

an invisible bullet

hitting me

gripping the mattress
my life raft in an angry sea

I watched the room spin
as my eyeballs
the cherries in a slot machine
came to a bouncing stop

The Last Time I Saw My Grandfather

The Last Time I Saw My Grandfather
The last time I saw my Grandfather was in a casket, at his funeral, dressed in his Sunday best. He was wearing the suite that he wore to church on Christmas, Easter, and to our Vacation Bible School Pageants. This isn't the way I wanted to remember Grandpa, which is why I don't like open casket funerals.

Grandpa didn't attend church every Sunday, instead he attended when it mattered....[Read Full Post]

The Pleasures I Have Known

The Pleasures I Have Known
These are the pleasures I have known,
The subtle joys of a life well lived,
Remembered through the veil of time,
When darkness threatens to overshadow light.

First is the scent of the morning dew,
Beaded on the lilacs purple bloom,
When spring greens the Oklahoma hills,
Where fields of wild flowers and feral grasses grew.

Second are the verse of God's holy Books,
Verses read in the early m...[Read Full Post]

Jumping silently from one second to the next;

Now,
for some people this wouldn't be a problem,
there are a few people out there
who don't have to do laundry every day.

White Recliner

White Recliner
I always think of Grandpa Newland,
whenever I see a white recliner.
I remember him setting in one,
with the Siamese cat beside him and the dog in his lap,
watching T.V.
Grandpa enjoyed setting ther,
with Jay beside him and Cindi or Popcorn in his lap,
Watching The Grand Old Opera.

To Specs
She approaches each child in turn,
playfully enthusiastic.

Each movement of her bobbed tail
wags her entire rear end.

Completely oblivious
to all other priorities,
her tail wags harder
with each stroke,
as each child
caresses her long brown and white coat.

Leashed energy
tugs at the brown leather strap
pulls me forward.

Star Crossed Lovers and Other Poems to the same person

Star Crossed Lovers:
To George Newland
We were star crossed lovers
standing on the edge of eternity,
awaiting the decree of fate,
that would forever seal our destinies,
and separate our paths.

I love him,
and thought he love me,
but it was only a game he played,
I was just another conquest,
another nude picture for his album.

To me he was an instructor,
who taught the difference between lust and love,
the father of ...[Read Full Post]

It's her eyes that tell the story,
The calm acceptance of love;
Her joy at my presence rumbles in her throat,
But it's her eyes that reveal her true feelings,
As she lays, with them closed, in my lap
Or watches me from a shelf.

Another Fearful Tuesday

Another Fearful Tuesday
The wind is blowing
Across the street the pine tree
I waving good-by to clouds.
I look out my front door. Across the street the limbs of the pine tree are blowing in the wind. There is a gray car parked under the pine tree, but it is not shaded by the tree. The sun cast long shadows from the south side of Sunrise Avenue. The shadows are those of palm trees and apartment buildings. T...[Read Full Post]

Monday Morning Terror or Is It Depression
It is about 11:13 am on Monday, April 13, 2015. I am terrified! I am afraid, but there is no explanation to this fear that I am feeling. At least, I do not think it has an explanation. I might find an explanation after I finish this entry. When I began this book, I intended to write memories of the past or essays. I have succeeded in writing some of the memories, but I have not written any e...[Read Full Post]

Mom's prayer beads are rose pink. I remember her using them when she was able to comprehend what she was doing. When she worked at the Show Boat she would chant God's Most Great Name before she went to work. I wish I could remember what they renamed the Show Boat after it was sold, but I guess it does...[Read Full Post]

A Long Day Writing Into Night
I am sitting at my computer. The door to the outside is open, but both the security screen is locked. I can see from the way the sunlight is angle that it is nearing sunset. The neighbors are playing some sort of game with a ball because I can hear it bouncing. A blue truck just drove east on Sunrise Avenue. Across the street the neighbors cars are parked at an angle (I spelled angle right this time). I...[Read Full Post]

The Broken Beans

The Broken Beans
I have heard of spilling beans, but not breaking beans. I remember my grandmother breaking beans, of course she called it snapping beans. I think the reason she used that term was because that was the sound the beans made when she broke them in half. My grandparent planted a garden every year and one of the thing they planted was string beans or green beans.

I am not sure why they were called sting beans, maybe i...[Read Full Post]

I Must Have a Secret Admirer
I must have a secret admirer because my horoscope keeps talking about romance. Romance is something I have not experienced in a long time, if ever. Sometime I wander if I ever experienced it. I know I did not with any of the men in my life. I do not remember either of them being romantic. In fact both of my, so called, romantic encounters were alcoholics. I do not think that alcoholics know how to be rom...[Read Full Post]

Idea for a Poetry Form

Idea for a Poetry Form
On Tuesday, April 7, while I was working the primary election polls I got an idea for a poetry form. This is a version of the Acrostic poetry form. In the acrostic form the first letter of each line spells out the title of the poem. I know of, at least, three versions of this form. There is the first letter acrostic which spells out the title down the left of the poem. There is the last letter acrostic which s...[Read Full Post]

The Reason I Enjoy Doing Surveys
I realized today that I enjoy doing surveys. I do not remember which survey I was doing when I realized this. When I first started doing surveys several years ago (I do not remember exactly when I began doing surveys) I enjoyed it. Then it got to the point where I did not enjoy doing them, but I plugged through anyway. I suppose I could have stopped and resigned from the survey group, but I did not....[Read Full Post]

My relationship with God is always improving because each day I learn something about how to make it better. I am a worrier!
