Item headers now have a more clean and condensed display. The "Show Details" link expands the header to include more information about the item. The "Always Show Details" link in any header's details area will set your account to default to have the details expansion open on all items you view. Once activated, clicking the "Always Hide Details" link will turn the option off. Enjoy! ![]() ~~SM |

We've set the screen width on Writing.Com to be "fluid". Rather than be confined to a rather small width, Writing.Com's content area will now expand to use the full width of your web browser. The size we had originally picked in 2000 was based on the average monitor size. I've been viewing the site with this new change for about 6 months and felt it was time to move it to the site as whole. ** UPDATE: The Content Width setting in your My Account -> Edit Preferences area allows members to set the width of their pages. The default is now set to "Fluid - To Browser Edge". Content Width is an existing account value, so if your content is not fluid, it is probable that you have the old value already set. ** UPDATE (9/20 @ 11:30pm): Ok, completely fluid to browser's edge can be a bit crazy looking for those who fully open their browser on a widescreen monitor. ![]() ~~SM |
For many, many (many) moons, members have request a "Review Only" option, without ratings. It has arrived. The Reviews Only; No Ratings option is now available. Within the item create/edit area members will find there are now 4 different rating/review options to serve the various wants of the community. Items set to the new Reviews Only; No Ratings act like all other items, except they do not provide the option to rate the item on the 1 to 5 scale. The items accept only reviews for feedback. We've left the "Email Comments" option in for those members looking for more casual feedback and looking to eliminate anonymous reviews. We hope this helps! ~~SM |
Keeping up with comments posted to blog entries just got easier with the new Show most recent blog comments link that we've placed in blog just below the "paging" area. Clicking the link will reveal the 10 most recent comments within the blog. Want to check out the latest buzz and blog comments? Click the new most recent comments shown the Blogs listing page. Enjoy! ~~SM |
Greetings! We've activated the "comments" section for all book items setup as a "Journal/Blog". (Previously the comments system was only activated on book set to be a member's "My Blog". [Edit: This feature can be Disabled using the "Blog Commenting" setting within a Book Item's create/edit screen.] ~~SM |

Greets, In April, a member emailed us noting that our "Most Viewed" sorting was not actually sorting results correctly. Indeed, when we looked into this, we found it was the result of changes we made to increase the site's speed and performance a few months earlier. Unable to find a viable solution at that time, we removed the sorting option until we could make it work right and work fast. (For those interested in the "technical" reasoning.... Because the view count is updated very often, while the rest of the item's data is not, in our database backend, we moved the "view count" field from the main item table into its own view table. This simple change removed a bunch of system overhead each time an item is viewed on the site... which is often. ![]() We finally devised a way to quickly sum both the old and new view count data and perform a sort on it in a way that doesn't make the item listing sort time unbearably slow. As such, Most Viewed sorting has returned to the item listings! Enjoy! ~~SM |
Recycling Bin Moves To Upgraded Membership We're pleased to announce that use of the Recycling Bin is now a standard part of Writing.Com's Upgraded Membership. This feature, which was previously available only to Premium Membership+, catches all items deleted from one's portfolio and hangs onto them. Items can be restored from the Recycling Bin simply by moving them out and back into your portfolio. This should cut down on some of the "Oops" moments our members have had. Items in your Recycling Bin do still count towards your item totals. You can, however, instantly purge your recycling bin at any time by clicking the Purge Recycling Bin link on your My Portfolio page. New Features for In & Out Items In & Outs are one of the most flexible item types on Writing.Com. We've made the following improvements to make them even more useful: ![]() ![]() ![]() submissions. ![]() ![]() |
